Friend, Servant, Slave and Prisoner of the Lord

Epesians 4:1-3

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

I have mentioned before the word ‘Philo’ in Greek means ‘love’ (social), ‘friend’ and also ‘associate’. In John 15 we see Jesus is speaking about the Father’s business thus the more appropriate meaning to use in ‘associate’ and not ‘friend’. Even coming to Lord’s relationship with Abraham the word is not ‘friend’ but ‘lover’ and comes from OT scriptures, it is for this reason we who are Abraham’s seed are referred to as the Lord’s Bride.

Coming to Servant and Slave (Bondman) the Greek words does not refer to actual slavery where the person is sold and has no rights. The right word would be bounded labor. We are bought for a price (and period) and the Lord does want us to pay Him back but to pay unto others as He did unto us. So though we are in debt to the Lord yet we repay to His people and not to Him directly.

In today’s scripture we see Paul uses the term ‘Prisoner’ and if we read further we see he speaks of being prisoner of the Fruits of the Spirit. Jesus said we will be judged and known by our fruits, which are not our deeds but the Fruits of the Spirit.

A Christian is known by not his or her verbal confession but by his or her spiritual confession and that is the Fruits of the Spirit. If one understands the salvation of mankind it is all about regaining the Fruits (Truth and Righteousness) which Adam and Eve lost by eating of the Tree of Doubt (Good and Bad).

Let us understand Christianity comes from within, not out of emotions but much deeper, that is out of the spirit. The light has to shine from within.

Tomorrow many Christians will be celebrating Valentine’s Day without understanding relationships with the Lord and with each other.

[Prayer Starter]

Lord You are Almighty God. You Lord created this world in Spirit and because darkness came You created the natural world so that darkness can be defeated by the light that shines in the spirit. Lord we pray we understand it is a spiritual war and not an earthly war so the weapons are the Fruits of the Spirit. Help us grow in the Fruits of the Spirit…

This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
