Read: Isaiah 44: 1,2

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear much fruit.” (John 15:16)

Certainly no one would like to have a friend who is a deceiver or a betrayer, but would rather choose the one who would trust him, understand him and love him in all seasons – good or bad. Interestingly Jesus selected men who had qualities like doubt, betrayal and unbelief as His friends. Even more, He took extra measures to help them trust and believe Him. And when they still disappointed Him He forgave them and gave them a great responsibility – to go into the world and preach the good news to everyone! Sounds incredible! Isn’t it? The 20th and 21st chapters of John’s gospel report about two men with serious flaws. First one is Thomas, who was a doubter. After His resurrection, when Jesus met His disciples in a locked room and showed them His hands and side they were overjoyed. When they told this exciting news to Thomas who was not there at that time, he refused to believe saying, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe it.” Next, we read of Peter. Even after seeing the resurrected Lord Jesus, Peter was scared of his commitment. He forgot His Master’s words, “Follow me. I will make you fisher of men” – and went back to his old trade of fishing. Leave alone Thomas and Peter. Others too had their own limitations – John had a quick temper, Judas was money minded, Philip had many questions. Jesus knew all their flaws and weaknesses even at the very beginning, yet He chose them!

Dear friends, every man in this world has his own limitations and shortcomings. Is there anyone who is perfect in all his ways? Every one of us are weak and easily yield to temptation. Jesus knows everything about every one of us, yet He loves us. He actually enjoys giving us the opportunity to do great things for Him despite our weaknesses. Even after we make grave mistakes, He abides with us. When we stumble along, He is right there cheering us and offering us His grace to stand for Him and serve Him. So, let us not take up the responsibility He has given us and do His work wholeheartedly.

Prayer : Almighty God, I admit that I am weak. I don’t know why You chose me as Your servant. But, You did choose me. Thank You for giving hope to my weary heart. I praise You for giving me strength through my weakness so that I can serve You all the days of my life. Amen.
